Canal Fulton native DJ Mekadog cites a childhood love of music as the reason for his acquiring a turntable at age 26. An expanded record collection followed, and so did his venture into professional turntabling.
Mekadog began to play in heavy-metal bands in Canton. The experience led to the recording of his first concept/scratch album, “Dog vs. Cat,” released by local indie label Intolerance Records. Together with “Dog vs. Cat” collaborator MC Wally, he evolved the recording project into a live hip-hop act with much local success, though this would hardly be the beginning of his career.
For the past five years Mekadog has been a member of the Cleveland-based Tropidelic, which blends dub, rock and reggae to vibe out NEO music fans. The band has undergone a number of lineup changes through the years, and though he’s not an original member of the group, Mekadog fits right into the mix. The group is currently working on a full-length album, which is slated for release in the coming months.
In addition to the solo stuff and Tropidelic responsibilities, Mekadog is also a member of the band Stereographic — on top of which he spends time with his wife and daughters.
A free download of Mekadog’s “Mash-ups and More” can be found on soundcloud.com, and he will be playing that funky music with Tropidelic all over the place this month. You can check them out Tribal Connection Art/Music Festival in Bellefontaine on May 12, Lemon Grove in Youngstown on May 19 and at Canton’s Auricle on May 27.
