On the surface, this band may seem immature and obnoxious, but underneath—well, that’s really what you get with these guys. The Giggitys’ new EP, Goo, introduces new listeners to one of the most experienced bands in the Akron hard-rock scene. Originally known as the Nimrods, guitarists/singers Ric Nimrod and Dan Halen and bassist Davey Rocket renamed themselves after the addition of new drummer Brett Moses. Despite the minor personnel change, the Giggitys are still doing what they’ve always done best—placing their feet shoulder-width apart, turning the amps up to 10 and shouting into the microphone.
Goo showcases six of the band’s newest and crudest anthems. Although the lyrical content is always tongue-in-cheek, consisting mostly of fractured love (really, hate) songs, The Giggitys have managed to craft some solid poppy punk rock. Raging guitar riffs, a driving beat and call-and-response vocal harmonies are a must, showing why this band, in one iteration or another, has been tearing up the area for almost 20 years. The second song, “Balls Deep in Love”, is a bright spot featuring a fun backing vocal line that’s been stuck in my head for days. “Fifteen Minutes Ago” deftly explains how Ric “just ran out of (his) ‘give a shit’ about 15 minutes ago.” Brilliant. They even managed to record a homage to everyone’s favorite Bruce Willis character, John McClane. Yippee-ki-yay, motherf*cker.
The Giggitys’ CD release parties are at Annabell’s in Akron on Dec. 11 and at the Spitfire Saloon in Cleveland on Dec. 18. Both shows are with the world’s best Christmas band, Missile Toe.
